Alternate title: "My GOD, Look At Those Effin' Legs She Was Drawing In 2002!"

Full-view is GIGANTIC. I'm sorry, but I wanted it to be visible.

Inspired by =Serrifth, who I remarked must have BRASS BALLS to post this old stuff. Oh, it's all so embarrassing. Some of the stuff from 2007 I still like, but in general... augh. I tried to keep it mostly to "personal" work and sketches rather than school assignments, because honestly there was very little "progress" made, at least stylistically, because I would attempt to change my style for the assignments, while all my sketching and personal work remained largely on the same track for this whole time.

2000: These are from the summer right after I turned 14, before I got to high school. At the time I was really into Harry Potter, new age philosophy, tabletop RPGs (a love which, I contest, shall never fade), and--obviously--angels. This isn't even the earliest example of my tremendous wing fetish.

2001, freshman year of high school, is conspicuously absent, because (incidentally, like =Serrifth) I just couldn't find anything from that time. I can visualize it in my head, but I think all the sketchbooks from that time are in my parents' attic. Rest assured, it was a lot more angels. Sometime near the middle of the year I became obsessed with anime, and my style reflected that to a SHAMEFUL degree. Which brings us to...

2002: Sophomore year. MY GOD THE LEGS. I can't even get over it. These aren't even the most egregious examples; I have some pictures where the legs are fully 2 1/2 times the length of the torso. The only thing I had going for me at this time was that clean ink work, and apparently my continuing wing fetish.

2003: Junior year. This is where my style took this weird quantum leap. I was still on the anime kick for the first half of the year, and then I think I realized how utterly limiting a purely anime style is anatomically. That was the summer I went to the pre-college at RISD; ~Scrumpy-n-Ziki may recognize the INFAMOUS Kissing Elves picture in the middle (which I still kind of like, admittedly!). That, by the way, is the picture that led me to my current tagline on my front page, "Kissing Elves Girl". Because I still draw them, damn it.

2004: Senior year. And this is where I practically abandoned fantasy entirely in favor of this weird classical-looking aesthetic. Everything was VERY historical (and all my Les Mis fanart came out of this period). Somehow, everyone's bodies got really thick, their legs really short, and their faces really pinched. I blame all the Neoclassical art I was looking at during that time.

2005: Freshman to sophomore year of college. Things start to stretch out again. This was a really terrible year for me artistically, which could explain why there's so little work here. Good things did come out of it, though; this was the year I met Alan and started drawing all our RP characters. Incessantly. To the great detriment of my assigned work.

2006: Sophomore to junior year. More RP development. The continuation of a really awful school year that made me almost drop out. I think I "rediscovered" color at this time. And hey, I did manage to get at least one portfolio piece out of it!

2007: Junior to senior year: the year I officially stopped sucking. Technically, I did more work than just the Urban Arcana development shown here, but that was honestly the most consuming project I'd worked on to date. There was some weird style schizophrenia going on between my sketches, which were MANY and obviously very involved, and my schoolwork, which... just sucked. That year I was forced to mess around with a whole bunch of media I just hated, and so I put ALL my effort into my sketches. I failed my end-of-year crit that year, and by the end I was just frustrated with my complete inability to "finish" anything.

2008: Super-senior year. Until I figured out... well... how to finish. I took a class called Comic Book and Storyboard, and practically learned more in that one class than I had in years of floundering around at art school trying to "discover my style". I was finishing shit left and right, and really glommed on to this inked splash page format. I started experimenting more seriously with digital color at this time too.

2009: I graduated in the beginning of the year, at long last. Since then, I've delved FULLY into digital color, but I'm still trying to reconcile my sketches with my finishes. It's not the same kind of ongoing torture that it used to be, certainly; in fact, it's been fun. Developing Astral Arcana while getting more active on DA has been fantastic for my artistic morale, and all the time I feel inspired and supported by the people on here and in real life who help me with my art.

So that's where we are, I guess. I'm fully prepared for the pointing and laughing that will come. Bring it! *shields self behind sketchbook*

Various media, compiled in PS. All characters are mine, ~Arthulin's or ~DrearyThoughts's (some of the 2004 stuff).

I think maybe the technique and originality parts are unnecessary for me to judge- yes, others do this. I do this. Nonetheless.

There is clear progression of technique and style, and in a good direction over your years. I er, graduated high school the same year and I think you are probably above me in skill. But your use of color and effectively lineart can clearly be seen to grow over the time, and in a definite good direction.

Plus, fantasy is just a kickass genre to draw in. This motivates me to try to produce more to keep up.
