Obviously, today is Farael Day.

I've had a sketch of this sitting on my computer for the longest time (by which I mean a few months at least) and just NEEDED to do something with it. It's the only picture I've done of Farael with his violin, so that's definitely worth noting. ;) Nothing hotter than a pretty boy with a pretty instrument.

I'm immensely pleased with the fact that that neither the instrument nor the pose is referenced (the only thing I needed to look up was the shape of the holes in the bridge, that funky little piece of pale wood that holds the strings up). As some of you may have learned via my "getting to know you" meme, I play the viola and took lessons seriously for about six years, so I have it pretty firmly ingrained in my head what almost everything related to the stringed-instrument family looks like. :D

Edit: At ~Arthulin's suggestion, I moved the lower corners behind his wings. I think I like it better this way.

Textures by `Princess-of-Shadows and *gild-a-stock, brush by ~green-eyed-butterfly.

Hi dear :)
you have been featured in my journal: [link]

By the way.. I'm still searching pieces for the second part of the collection.
Do you have any other picture of a man wearing a coat or a waistcoat? If you link it to me if you want it featured ^^

From one violist to another, you did a fabulous job on this! I love it! :) Farael has great posture and a great bow-hold.

WOO!! Thanks so much. :D I think I just replied to your... reply... about how you've been playing viola for SUCH a long time. I kind of gave it up, but to be totally honest, doing this picture actually made me pick it up and practice some for the first time in YEARS! :giggle: Agh, memories of LEARNING that frickin' bow hold. I'm glad I've got something to show for it! ;)

Oh, learning the bow hold was painful, I totally agree! I am very sure my private teacher wanted to :slap: :stupidme: me numerous times trying to get me to do it right..."CURVE THAT PINKY!" That's really cool you were inspired to play a little bit again because of the picture - you may not play as much, but you'll always have it! ;) Music and art fall in the category of you may get rusty, but you never really lose it. :)

Ah, thanks! Violist here, but I think I might've mentioned that in the comments. You don't play that much for that long and not learn a thing or two about the position you have when you're playing it, as I'm sure you know. ;)

I LOVE the Viola, and Cello, and any bowed stringed instrument. The detail is great, the ONLY thing that I can nit-pick about is possibly that the instrument looks a bit small. That's all I can do to critisize, but hey; I'm not nearly as good as you art wise, so feel free to disregard my observation.

But still a marvelous work, definatly favin' it.

Oh gosh, Iím a HUGE sucker for guys who can play instruments, haha. And good choice with the violin, too!
I love this picture of Farael :D He looks stunning and elegant, and his pose is really well done. I like how you used blue/purple shadows, and I think they look great with the gold in his shirt and on the violin.

My only critique would his hair; I think it may be just a little too high, even for that face angle. Other than that, everything else looks wonderful!

Yeah, I think you're right about the hair, but I'm handwaving anatomical weirdness on this one because the sketch is pretty old (over half a year old at this point) and I REALLY suck at redrawing stuff with the tablet. -__- But yes. Doesn't take away the fact that YOU ARE CORRECT. :highfive:

Either way, glad you like it... I too am a major, major sucker for instrument-playing boys, ESPECIALLY stringed instruments.

I can't get enough of Farael

He's looks so calm in this picture, maybe in one of those moments of total peace, where he gets to play the violin, while thinking about things *O*

You drew the pose and the violin awesomely! Even more for not looking at a ref O.O congratulations *O*

And I love the way you draw hands ;3;

Ahhh Farael *O* *fangirl attack*

I love the overall theme and composition, but what really caught my attention was the absolute mastery with which you drew both the violin and his hands... and no refs? o_o That's just amazing!! I drew violine players once or twice and even with refs I found it a pain to get it right. >.>

Excellent, fantastic job on this one! =D

Aw man, thanks!! :D Yeah, I have a lot of experience with the viola so I remembered it well enough to draw the whole thing totally ref-less. :XD: Funny how years of actually DOING something will give you a pretty good idea of what it looks like... :giggle:

I did not know he played the violin - he should hang out with Freya sometime if that's the case. Beautiful violinists unite! I like his outfit and the fact that he's sensibly unbuttoned his waistcoat so he can actually move his arms properly. Critwise, do watch those hands, as they are quite small - but the arms are deffo in the right place so congrats for doing that without a ref!

WELL NOW YOU KNOW. :meow: It's not something he does CONSTANTLY, but often enough that it warranted at least one picture, since boys playing the violin are HOT HOT. ;)

Any weirdness on the hands is due largely to the fact that this sketch was WAY old, and I'm not good enough at tablet drawing to rework them in the final version. :XD: (Besides, the finger positions are pretty good, and I didn't want to mess with them just to make the hands bigger. You'll have to pardon me for that. ;) At least I didn't end up submitting it the way it was earlier, because on the hand holding the bow I FORGOT TO PUT A THUMB, and only realized it after I was almost done with the coloring. :O I did fix that, because I knew SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, ["Probably Gina", I thought to myself] would notice it. ;))

Haha! I have that ANNOYING habit of noticing things like missing thumbs. I'm that irritating watcher who points it out! (mostly because I've done all this and more myself). you are excused, due to the age of the sketch and the fact that I'm entirely sympathetic to not being able to edit by tablet drawing (being APPALLING at tablet drawing myself).

I HATE doing it!! For some reason I just can't make it look like there's anything actually THERE, you know? Like it's just a contour drawing and there's nothing actually supporting the figure? And when I try to freehand a figure with the tablet, all my proportions come out wonky and wrong! I can't figure out why it works that way. I wonder if I'd do any better on a Cintiq?

I think it's probably just a practice thing - do you have a Wacom? There's probably no good reason why we shouldn't be able to draw on tablets. Maybe we haven't tried enough - I know I haven't!

I do indeed. It's weird, because all those speedpaints I did had decent proportions... I just can't do LINES with them. Maybe it's just that it's too precise, and the zooming in and out does stuff to my sense of proportion?

I think you're right - lines need to be very precise which is why they're so hard to do with a tablet. If lines are wonky the whole pic looks out.

MMm love the clothes *V* The folds in the shirt look awesome, and the vest :3 I love vests. I really love the shading on the violin too. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but his expression looks kinda disinterested, like Trean is forcing him to learn to play (like all our mothers at some point in time XDDD). I know we were talking about how we hate when people say 'oh this reminds me of...' but this is only to prove a point, SO PLEASE FORGIVE ME.

The point being that, hot, aristocratic, violin boys are hot. See here [link]

Oh, no, I don't mind "this reminds me of" at all the context of "it seems like he's..." or whatever, it just bugs me when someone's like "THIS ORIGINAL CHARACTER REMINDS ME OF THESE CHARACTERS FROM THIS MOVIE" or "YOU DON'T KNOW ME AND WE'VE NEVER HAD A CONVERSATION BUT THEY'RE JUST LIKE MY OCS LAAAA LAAAAAAAA". :fork: You are very firmly in the safe zone. ;)

I think at the time this picture was drawn, he's a little too old for anyone to be forcing him anymore, but I suspect she might've forced him when he was younger. All of her kids have musical training in some respect or other (I think her daughter sings and her younger son plays flute), so it's possible that it was all due to her relentless meddling. (For what it's worth, she meddled far more with Fae than any of her subsequent children out of a desperate desire to make him come out NOT a genocidal maniac.) Either way, the expression here... I wasn't going for disinterested, so maybe I didn't nail it right. ;) When I drew this I imagined he was probably thinking about Rian, so he might be a little... distracted, perhaps? :iconteheplz:

OTL yes, distracted is probably a better word  I can definitely see Rian being on his mind. About not becoming a genocidal maniac: at least the bar for success was set low ;A; Though Trean may not have seen it that way XD
